Auch Mesmer werde ich mittels einer Kurzbiographie vorstellen und die Grundgedanken des Mesmerismus bzw. des Magnetismus erläutern. Mit Hilfe der Kerngedanken beider Theorien werde ich im Hauptteil zeigen, warum das Augenmotiv in enger Verbindung zu Nathanaels Krankheit steht und warum das Motiv der Augen sogar für dessen Selbstmord verantwortlich gemacht werden kann. Zum Schluss führe ich Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der auf das Augenmotiv angewandten Theorien auf und fasse die wichtigsten Gedanken noch einmal kurz zusammen.
