About us
Voices for Burma was founded in the United Kingdom in 2003 by a group of socially-conscious students deeply concerned about the infringement of human rights in Burma and determined to improve the welfare of the Burmese people. Four years later, our team is international, spanning several continents. We are a diverse group of people, united by our belief in the sanctity of human rights for everyone, regardless of ethnic origin, religion, age, sex or any other arbitrary criteria, and our anger at the continuing abuses perpetrated by the SPDC (State Peace and Development Council) against the people of Burma.
VFB recognizes that the political situation in Burma is very complex and nuanced, and that there is no simple solution. Many Burma campaign groups feel that economic sanctions and a tourist boycott are the solution and on this point we disagree. However like all Burma campaign groups, our ultimate goal is to help the people of Burma achieve freedom, democracy and basic human rights, and it is our belief that these things can only take hold in an environment of cooperation and communication, embracing different viewpoints. We welcome and encourage debate on the issue of tourism in Burma and hope to use this space as an open forum where all voices can be heard.
Objectives
- To raise awareness of the human rights situation in Burma
- To promote responsible tourism in Burma
- To provide up-to-date, unbiased and reliable travel information on Burma
- To provide a forum for debate on Burma
- To promote democracy in Burma through activism within and outside of the country
- To improve the welfare and human rights of all ethnic groups in Burma, particularly in terms of economic, social and political rights.
It is the aim of Voices for Burma to equip travelers with the knowledge they need to make responsible decisions that will enhance the welfare of the people of Burma, and not support the SPDC.
